Should I Swaddle My Baby? Is Swaddling Safe?
As a baby sleep consultant, I get many questions about swaddling: Is swaddling good for sleep? Is it safe to swaddle a baby? What age do I stop swaddling my baby?
In this blog post, we’ll discuss swaddling safety, benefits of swaddling, and when babies should transition out of the swaddle.
Why Swaddle a Baby?
Healthy babies are born with a Moro reflex, causing them to startle at sudden noises or movements and throw their arms outwards. Although this reflex is normal during the first few months of life, newborns often startle themselves awake and have a hard time settling back to sleep.
Swaddling helps minimize this reflex by keeping a baby’s arms close to their body, promoting longer sleep times.
Another advantage of swaddling is that it creates a snug and comforting environment similar to the womb, which is soothing for your newborn.
Is Swaddling a Newborn Safe?
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Canadian Paediatric Society, and Health Canada, swaddling can be safe if done properly.
How to Swaddle Safely
Here are some tips to safely swaddle your baby:
- Avoid overheating by dressing your baby in just one layer of clothing and using a lightweight swaddling blanket.
- Ensure the swaddle doesn’t cover your baby’s nose or mouth.
- Keep the swaddle loose enough around the hips and legs to allow for movement and prevent hip dysplasia.
- Always lay your baby on their back to sleep in a crib with only a firm mattress and fitted sheet to reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).
When to Stop Swaddling a Baby
I recommend transitioning out of the swaddle by 8 weeks of age or when your baby begins to show signs of rolling, whichever comes first.
Why stop swaddling at 8 weeks? If a swaddled baby rolls onto their tummy, there is an increased risk of SIDS.
While swaddling can help your newborn sleep more soundly, it’s important to follow safety measures and recognize when to transition out to avoid risks. By following these tips, you can create a safe and soothing sleep environment, promoting healthy sleep habits as your baby grows.
